Hardly any word in perfumery carries as many negative connotations as "synthetic". It conjures up ideas of cheapness, substitutes, and chemistry sets. This equation is incorrect. Without synthetic fragrance materials, modern perfumery would barely exist, many endangered natural ingredients would have long since vanished, and entire olfactory impressions would simply be impossible to recreate. Understanding the role of the laboratory allows us to judge fragrances more fairly, in both directions.

What synthetics actually mean

There are three distinct groups. Firstly, molecules that occur in exactly the same way in nature, but are created in the laboratory. Secondly, molecules derived and modified from natural substances. Thirdly, molecules that do not exist in nature. Only the third group is truly new, and it is the most intriguing.

Scents that do not exist

Lily of the valley cannot be distilled, as the blossom does not yield its oil. Every lily of the valley fragrance in the world is a reconstruction. The same applies to lilac, violet blossom, and peony. Even "fresh laundry", "sea air", or "rain on asphalt" only exist because someone created them in the laboratory.

Why synthetic fragrances protect raw materials

Musk originally came from the glandular secretion of the musk deer, ambergris from the digestive tract of the sperm whale. Today, both have been replaced by synthetic molecules, which has measurably relieved the pressure on both animal species. For sandalwood and oud, synthetics ease the pressure on overexploited reserves.

The honest disadvantage

A natural extract contains hundreds of compounds, whereas a synthetic molecule contains exactly one. This is why purely synthetic compositions can sometimes feel flatter and develop less over time. Fine perfumery combines both: natural ingredients for depth and movement, synthetics for stability, clarity, and availability.
