Oud: How diseased bark becomes the most expensive wood
The raw ingredient a tree only produces under stress.

Oud is the only major perfume ingredient that originates from a disease. An Aquilaria tree that remains healthy yields nothing but soft, odourless wood. Only when a specific fungus infects the heartwood does the tree defend itself with a dark, dense resin, and it is precisely this resin that is oud. In the wild, this happens to only a fraction of trees. Consequently, oud is among the most expensive natural substances in existence, more costly than gold, gram for gram.
Why it is so rare
Estimates suggest that in wild populations, only a small percentage of trees develop significant resin deposits, and this process takes decades. Wild Aquilaria populations have been depleted accordingly and are now protected under conservation laws. The trade therefore increasingly relies on plantations where trees are deliberately inoculated to trigger resin production.
What oud smells like
The honest answer: incredibly varied. Genuine oud can be woody, leathery, smoky, medicinal, sweet, or distinctly animalic, depending on its origin, the fungus, and its age. For Western noses, the first impression is often surprising, almost reminiscent of a barnyard or cheese. After a few minutes, it evolves into something warm and resinous.
What goes into Western fragrances
When an affordable fragrance advertises oud, it usually contains little to no genuine oud, but rather an oud accord: a recreation made of woody notes, resins, and synthetic molecules. This is not a deception, but the only way to make this character widely accessible at all. The accord is significantly smoother and sweeter than the original.
