Hardly any fragrance begins as convincingly as a fine citrus scent, and hardly any disappoints so quickly. After an hour, there is often nothing left of the radiant bergamot. This is not a defect in quality, but rather the nature of the raw materials. Citrus molecules are small and light, evaporating quickly. Knowing this changes how we choose and wear citrus.
Why citrus is so fleeting
The scent of lemon, bergamot, or grapefruit comes predominantly from terpenes, small molecules with a low boiling point. They disperse into the air immediately upon contact with the warmth of the skin. This is precisely what makes them so sparkling, and precisely what limits their lifespan. No perfumer can change this without destroying their character.
What a citrus fragrance needs as a base
A citrus fragrance without a foundation is gone within an hour. With a supportive base, the bright impression remains, anchored by something that lingers. The following have proven particularly effective:
- Vetiver and cedarwood: dry, they extend the wear without adding weight.
- White musk: close to the skin, softening the opening rather than making it sharp.
- Neroli and petitgrain: derived from the same plant as bitter orange, but lasting significantly longer.
- Light amber notes: provide warmth without overshadowing the freshness.
What you can do
Citrus is particularly sensitive to dry skin. An unscented lotion applied underneath extends the wear of this fragrance family more noticeably than any other. Secondly, apply to the back of the neck rather than the wrists, as it is cooler there. Thirdly, reapplying in the afternoon is perfectly acceptable for citrus, unlike with heavier compositions.
The question of sunlight
Some natural citrus oils contain substances that make the skin sensitive to light. In modern perfumery, perfumers therefore predominantly work with purified oils, regulated by IFRA standards. With natural cosmetics that have not undergone this process, it is worth checking the warning label.
