Winter fragrance: how the cold dampens scent, and how to counter it
Why your favourite fragrance suddenly seems to disappear in January.

In winter, many complain that their perfume no longer lasts. Usually, the opposite is true: it lasts longer, we simply cannot smell it as well. Cold temperatures slow down evaporation, meaning fewer molecules rise, and dry indoor heating disperses them more quickly. Added to this is drier winter skin, which holds onto fragrance less effectively. A winter fragrance does not need to be stronger, therefore, but rather structured differently, and it requires a different approach to application.
Why the cold dampens scent
Fragrance is only perceived when molecules escape into the air. At lower temperatures, this process slows down. The scent is still there, it simply barely projects. Anyone who reapplies as a result will suddenly smell far too strong in an overheated train.
Which winter fragrances carry in the cold
- Amber: warmth with structure, the classic winter direction.
- Spicy: cinnamon, clove, cardamom. They do not feel heavy in the cold, but rather invigorating.
- Leather: dry, smoky, present even at two degrees.
- Gourmand: perfectly balanced in winter, whereas in summer it can become overwhelming.
Three simple steps to counter the dampening effect
Firstly, apply to well-moisturised skin, which compensates for winter dryness. Secondly, apply closer to warm areas, such as the base of the throat and the wrist rather than the back of the neck. Thirdly, do not spray onto your coat, but onto the skin beneath, as the warmth will carry the scent upwards as soon as you step inside.
The mistake of reapplying
Because we can barely smell our own fragrance outdoors, many reapply as they leave. Once indoors, this immediately becomes overwhelming. It is better to apply properly once in the morning and trust that indoor warmth will do the rest.
