Tonka Bean: The note that rounds everything off
Between vanilla and tobacco lies a shrivelled black seed.

When a fragrance is warm without being sweet, the tonka bean is often behind it. The seed of a South American tree, it looks like a shrivelled black almond and smells of freshly mown hay, almond, tobacco and a hint of vanilla all at once. In perfumery, it is one of the most useful building blocks of all, rounding off sharp edges without weighing down the composition.
Coumarin: the substance behind it
The characteristic scent comes predominantly from coumarin, which is present in high concentrations in dried tonka beans. In 1868, it was one of the first fragrance ingredients to be synthetically produced, marking the beginning of modern perfumery. The very first fougère fragrance was built on exactly this.
What tonka smells like
Most of all like warm hay with almond and a touch of tobacco, accompanied by a creamy sweetness that is noticeably drier than vanilla. It is precisely this difference that makes it so valuable. Where vanilla makes a composition soft and rounded, tonka lends it warmth with structure.

- It connects the base and heart, closing gaps in the middle.
- It tempers the sugary sweetness of gourmands.
- It gives amber a mature, tobacco-like depth, as in Scent No. 37 · Manfredonia.
- As a fixative, it helps lighter notes last longer.
Why it must not be eaten
In larger quantities, coumarin can cause liver damage, which is why tonka beans are strictly limited or banned as a food ingredient in many countries. In perfumery, specific maximum limits apply via the IFRA standards. When applied to the skin in standard dosages, the note is completely safe.
