Perfume shelf life: how long a bottle remains at its best
A perfume does not spoil like milk. It changes slowly, and in ways that are mostly preventable.

On the packaging, you will find a small jar symbol with a number, usually 24M or 36M. This indicates the shelf life after opening, and it regularly leads to misunderstandings. A perfume does not go bad like food after these months. A perfume's longevity depends almost entirely on how you store the bottle, and stored unopened in a dark place, a fragrance will easily endure for many years.
What actually happens
Three processes work against a fragrance: oxidation caused by oxygen in the bottle, degradation by UV light, and the acceleration of both by heat. The result is not spoilage, but a shift. First, the light top notes are lost, then the fragrance becomes flatter, often taking on a slightly sour or metallic edge.
How to tell if a fragrance has turned
- The colour is significantly darker than before.
- The first impression smells sharp, sour, or of alcohol.
- The familiar top note is missing, and the fragrance starts directly in the heart.
- The liquid is cloudy.
A slightly altered fragrance is not dangerous, it is simply no longer what you paid for.
Why the bathroom is the worst place
It combines all three enemies: heat from the shower, light from the window, and constant temperature changes. A bottle on the windowsill ages many times faster than the same bottle in a bedroom wardrobe.
Preserving perfume longevity: three key points
- Darkness. A closed cupboard, or the original box if in doubt.
- Cool and consistent. Away from radiators and windowsills, but not in the fridge either.
- Closed. Keep the spray head on. Atomisers are more airtight than bottles with stoppers.
A large bottle or several small ones
The emptier a bottle, the more air sits above the liquid, and the faster the remainder oxidises. If you spray infrequently, you are better off with smaller sizes or a fragrance wardrobe of several bottles that rotate regularly.
